Das Leben Jane Austens (1775 bis 1817) verlief ähnlich unberührt von den historischen Ereignissen ihrer Zeit wie das ihrer Heldinnen und Helden. Durch ihre geradezu modern anmutende Kunst der Seelenanalyse entstand ein Bild menschlicher Tugenden und Unzulänglichkeiten, das bis heute nichts von seiner Farbigkeit und Frische verloren hat.
