Follower-Centric Approaches to Leadership
New research on followers as fundamental participants in the development, impact, and maintenance of leadership processes The vast majority of studies of leadership are cross-sectional comparisons of leadership styles and followers' perceptions of leaders' styles; however, within the last two decades scholars have begun to study the other side of the proverbial coin, focusing on followers' styles and the processes of followership. The studies in this volume examine what it means to "reverse the lens" in leadership research by studying how followers perceive and enact their own roles in the co-production of leadership. The contributions highlight new research on followers' needs, motivations, and attributions as critical aspects of the leadership relationship. They present new theories and perspectives on the study of leadership and followership as well as potential directions for further research. The followercentric approach to leadership covers questions such as: . How do followers perceive followership, i.e., construct and enact their roles in relation to leaders? . What does it mean to be labelled a follower? . How do individual characteristics and qualities of followers influence the development of leaders? . What roles do followers' needs, values, wants, and preferences play in their tolerance or affinity for certain leadership styles? . What types of leadership help in developing effective followership and what types of followership help in developing effective leadership?

Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a debilitating disorder that has often proved difficult to treat. Advances in conceptualization, diagnosis, and treatment now allow an empirically supported approach to its diagnosis and treatment. After briefly outlining theoretical models, this clear and concise book presents an integrative, up-to-date treatment protocol for GAD. Suitable both for practitioners and for students, it guides readers through assessment and differential diagnosis, etiological models such as cognitive avoidance, positive beliefs about worry, and intolerance of uncertainty, and treatment techniques. The therapeutic approach described here integrates techniques from CBT, mindfulness- and acceptance-based therapy, as well as motivational interviewing. This practical volume is rounded off by case vignettes, handouts, questionnaires, and other useful tools.

A provocative look at research and practice in suicide prevention - a "must read" for all concerned. This provocative and erudite book highlights theoretical and methodological challenges that have plagued and continue to plague the field of suicidology. The basic premise is that recent research has not served to advance our understanding of suicidal behavior, but tends to repeat older research, often apparently without awareness that we are often merely "reinventing the wheel". As the authors maintain: "Very little of consequence has appeared in suicidology for many years - no new theory and no ground-breaking research." The book discusses the contributions that each of the major disciplines have made to suicidology (is there a misplaced devotion to Durkheim's 100-year-old theories?), and provide an overview of research and theories in some typical areas. Drawing from this, specific recommendations as to what researchers and theorists can do in the future to advance our understanding of suicide and suicide prevention are offered. It is hoped that these recommendations will stimulate research and theorizing so that our understanding of suicide will progress.

A high proportion of couples in western industrialized countries are unable to have children, and in many cases these couples need psychosocial support. This book describes a range of counseling and therapy approaches that can be used in a variety of circumstances. The approaches described here provide concrete assistance and advice on psychosocial interventions for all professionals who are active in reproductive medicine, fertility treatment, and counseling or therapy for couples. The book introduces the most recent knowledge about psychosomatic treatment of fertility disorders, and describes assessment methods that can be used in everyday practice by those providing both medical treatment and counseling for fertility disorders. On the basis of numerous case examples, various different approaches to counseling and therapy are described, including, for example, specific approaches that can be taken by primary care or family physicians, or how to approach the problems in couples with different cultural backgrounds. A manual for gynecologists in the final chapter provides concrete advice and guidelines for a holistic, psychosomatic course of treatment for childless couples.

Time Series Analysis in Meteorology and Climatology Duchon, C: Time Series Analysis in Meteorology
Time Series Analysis in Meteorology and Climatology provides an accessible overview of this notoriously difficult subject. Clearly structured throughout, the authors develop sufficient theoretical foundation to understand the basis for applying various analytical methods to a time series and show clearly how to interpret the results. Taking a unique approach to the subject, the authors use a combination of theory and application to real data sets to enhance student understanding throughout the book. This book is written for those students that have a data set in the form of a time series and are confronted with the problem of how to analyse this data. Each chapter covers the various methods that can be used to carry out this analysis with coverage of the necessary theory and its application. In the theoretical section topics covered include; the mathematical origin of spectrum windows, leakage of variance and understanding spectrum windows. The applications section includes real data sets for students to analyse. Scalar variables are used for ease of understanding for example air temperatures, wind speed and precipitation. Students are encouraged to write their own computer programmes and data sets are provided to enable them to recognize quickly whether their programme is working correctly- one data set is provided with artificial data and the other with real data where the students are required to physically interpret the results of their periodgram analysis. Based on the acclaimed and long standing course at the University of Oklahoma, the book is distinct in its approach to the subject matter in that it is written specifically for readers in meteorology and climatology and uses a mix of theory and application to real data sets.

The Architecture of Transgression AD Sara, R: Architecture of Transgression AD
Transgression suggests operating beyond accepted norms and radically reinterpreting practice by pushing at the boundaries of both what architecture is, and what it could or even should be. The current economic crisis and accompanying political/social unrest has exacerbated the difficulty into which architecture has long been sliding: challenged by other professions and a culture of conservatism, architecture is in danger of losing its prized status as one of the pre-eminent visual arts. Transgression opens up new possibilities for practice. It highlights the positive impact that working on the architectural periphery can make on the mainstream, as transgressive practices have the potential to reinvent and reposition the architectural profession: whether they are subverting notions of progress; questioning roles and mechanisms of production; aligning with political activism; pioneering urban interventions; advocating informal or incomplete development; actively destabilising environments or breaking barriers of taste. In this new dispersed and expanded field of operation, the balance of architectural endeavour is shifted from object to process, from service to speculation, and from formal to informal in a way that provides both critical and political impetus to proactively affect change. Asymptote, an award-winning New York City -- based architectural firm, expands the boundaries of traditional architectural practice with work that ranges from buildings and urban design to computer-generated environments. Recognized internationally as both leading-edge architects and virtual-reality artists as well as sought-after critics and teachers, Asymptote partners Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid have emphasized research into cultural trends and technological influences as the core of their practice. The firm has completed or is overseeing projects around the world, with commissions as diverse as a trading floor for the New York Stock Exchange; a multimedia research park in Kyoto, Japan; a modular furniture system for the Knoll furniture company; a music theater in Graz, Austria; and a new center for art and technology for the Guggenheim Museum in SoHo, New York. Designed and written by the partners, Asymptote is the first book to fully document their "real world" (as opposed to virtual) projects. In mathematical terms, the word "asymptote" is defined as a line that a given curve gets closer and closer to, but never touches, as it gets further from the origin towards infinity. In architectural terms, Asymptote is the Manhattan-based architectural design and research practice established by Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid in 1989.Rashid and Couture's work is intriguing because it draws inspiration from a wide range of sources not traditionally associated with architecture -- among them the design of airline interiors, sporting equipment, and organic systems like seashells and honeycombs; and various means of communicating and disseminating information. Their projects areconcerned as much with light, speed, and traversing virtual boundaries as with "real-world" geometries and building systems. Hani Rashid is one of the founding instructors in the "paperless studio" curriculum at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, a progra

Suicide and Euthanasia in Older Adults
Suicide among older people is a significant problem, but one that has tended to be neglected in recent years. And in an age where populations and cultures are becoming increasingly mixed due to migration and globalization, it is vital that lessons concerning suicide and euthanasia be learned from different countries. This book provides help by bringing together a unique range of perspectives on aging, suicide, and euthanasia from different cultures and countries around the world. In addition to analytical overviews of the relationship between socio-economic or psychological factors and suicidal behavior, differences between younger and older suicides, family factors, and physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia, contributions by leading authorities from 10 different regions each contain a description of suicide in old age, as well as discussions of views concerning the role of the elderly in that culture and the issue of euthanasia/assisted suicide, especially in the terminally ill. This book is of interest not just for suicidologists but also for psychiatrists, psychologists, sociologists, ethicists, thanatologists, geriatricians, psychogeriatricians and psychogerontologists. A remarkable book, dealing with vital but often neglected topics: . Suicide in the elderly . Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide . Cultural aspects
Fruits is a collection of Tokyo street fashion portraits from Japan's premier street fanzine of the same name. 'Fruits' was established in 1994, by photographer Shoichi Aoki, initially as a project to document the growing explosion in street fashion within the suburbs of Tokyo. Over the last five years, the magazine has grown to cult status and is now avidly followed by thousands of Japanese teenagers who also use the magazine as an opportunity to check out the latest styles and trends. The average age of the kids featured in the magazine is between 12 and 18, and the clothes that they wear are a mixture of high fashion -- Vivienne Westwood is a keen favourite -- and home-made ensembles which when combined create a novel, if not hysterical, effect. This extensive collection of portraits represents a unique documentation of the changing face of street fashion throughout the last decade. Colourful, fascinating and funny, this is the first time these cult images have been published outside Japan. Fruits will delight followers of fashion and youth culture.

Felix "FX" Linder leads SABRE Labs GmbH, a Berlin-based professional consulting company specializing in security analysis, system design creation, and verification work. Felix looks back at 18 years of programming and over a decade of computer security consulting for enterprise, carrier, and software vendor clients. This experience allows him to rapidly dive into complex systems and evaluate them from a security and robustness point of view, even in atypical scenarios and on arcane platforms. In his spare time, FX works with his friends from the Phenoelit hacking group on different topics, which have included Cisco IOS, SAP, HP printers, and RIM BlackBerry in the past. Gerardo Richarte has been doing reverse engineering and exploit development for more than 15 years non-stop. In the past 10 years he helped build the technical arm of Core Security Technologies, where he works today. His current duties include developing exploits for Core IMPACT, researching new exploitation techniques and other low-level subjects, helping other exploit writers when things get hairy, and teaching internal and external classes on assembly and exploit writing. As result of his research and as a humble thank you to the community, he has published some technical papers and open source projects, presented in a few conferences, and released part of his training material. He really enjoys solving tough problems and reverse engineering any piece of code that falls in his reach just for the fun of doing it.
They Called Her Styrene, etc.
American artist Ed Ruscha began making prints and drawings consisting of one word or phrase in the late 1950s and has continued to explore the language-based imagery that has become a hallmark of his work. Improving Memory and Study Skills Herrmann, D: Improving Memory
This text is designed to serve as a primary text for teaching the science of studying to university and other students. Divided into five main sections, 13 chapters deal with: (1) Fundamentals, including scientific findings concerning learning and studying, and the physiological and psychological basis of memory; (2) Physical and emotional state when studying/taking exams; (3) How best to store and remember information; (4) Using the environment and things around us to help; (5) Integrating the above. This text presents both the rationale and the methods that have led to a new and successful multimodal approach to developing memory and study skills. Not only is the book full of practical recommendations for both teaching and learning these skills. In addition, the scientific reasons for the suggested procedures are clearly laid out, and the explanations in turn are grounded in practical examples. Each of the 13 chapters is rounded off by a concise summary of the most salient points, and the book itself is completed by a comprehensive glossary, and full author and subject indexes.
