Nach dem Studium der Pharmazie wurde Andreas Bechthold im Jahr 1991 an der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn zum Dr. rer. nat. promoviert. In den Jahren 1992 bis 1994 folgten Forschungsaufenthalte an der University of Washington in den USA und an der Kyoto University in Japan. Nach seiner Habilitation und dem Erwerb der Venia legendi für Pharmazeutische Biologie an der Universität Tübingen erhielt Andreas Bechthold im Jahr 2000 den Ruf auf eine C3-Professur an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, zeitgleich gründete er die Firma Combinature-Biopharm in Berlin. Seit 2001 ist er Inhaber einer C4-Professur am Institut für Pharmazeutische Wissenschaften, Bereich Pharmazeutische Biologie und Biotechnologie, an der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg. 2006 wurde er mit dem Phoenix-Pharmazie-Wissenschaftspreis ausgezeichnet. Andreas Bechthold ist Dekan der Fakultät für Chemie, Pharmazie und Geowissenschaften der Universität Freiburg.
