Führen also alle Wege nach Rom?

A provocative look at research and practice in suicide prevention - a "must read" for all concerned. This provocative and erudite book highlights theoretical and methodological challenges that have plagued and continue to plague the field of suicidology. The basic premise is that recent research has not served to advance our understanding of suicidal behavior, but tends to repeat older research, often apparently without awareness that we are often merely "reinventing the wheel". As the authors maintain: "Very little of consequence has appeared in suicidology for many years - no new theory and no ground-breaking research." The book discusses the contributions that each of the major disciplines have made to suicidology (is there a misplaced devotion to Durkheim's 100-year-old theories?), and provide an overview of research and theories in some typical areas. Drawing from this, specific recommendations as to what researchers and theorists can do in the future to advance our understanding of suicide and suicide prevention are offered. It is hoped that these recommendations will stimulate research and theorizing so that our understanding of suicide will progress.

How is suicide portrayed in the cinema and what does it mean for suicide prevention? The first-ever comprehensive study of film suicide analyzes more than 1,500 film suicides. The portrayal of suicide in cinema can impact public understanding and effective prevention of suicide. This book presents the first-ever comprehensive analysis of how suicide has been portrayed in films over 110 years, based on a thorough evaluation of more than 1,500 film suicides - 1,377 in American films, 135 in British films. One striking finding is that while the research literature generally attributes suicide to individual psychiatric or mental health issues, cinema and film solidly endorse more social causes. In a compelling blend of social science and humanities approaches, the authors use quantitative methods, as well as the voices of scriptwriters, directors, actors, and actresses, dozens of illustrative frame-grabs, and numerous case examples to answer core questions such as: Are we guilty of over-neglecting social factors in suicide prevention and research? Do cinematic portrayals distort or accurately reflect the nature of suicide in the real world? Has film presentation of suicide changed over 110 years? What are the literary roots of cinema portrayals? This unique book makes fascinating reading for all concerned with suicide prevention, as well as areas such as sociology, film and media studies, and mass communication.

One, Two, Where's My Shoe?
Born in Strasbourg, in the Alsace region of France, in 1931, Tomi Ungerer started drawing as a small boy. Growing up in Nazi-occupied Strasbourg, drawing caricatures was for him a form of resistance. Described on his school-leaving certificate as a ‘depraved and rebellious character’, he hitch-hiked around Europe, getting as far as Lapland, rather than going to university. Inspired by his heroes Saul Steinberg, James Thurber and Charles Addams, Ungerer landed in New York in 1956, with only $60 dollars in his pocket and a suitcase full of drawings. He quickly found success as an illustrator and caricaturist, becoming a star almost overnight. He published his first book for children, The Mellops Go Flying, in 1957, and went on to publish 80 books over the next ten years, covering all aspects of his work.
Time Series Analysis in Meteorology and Climatology Duchon, C: Time Series Analysis in Meteorology
Time Series Analysis in Meteorology and Climatology provides an accessible overview of this notoriously difficult subject. Clearly structured throughout, the authors develop sufficient theoretical foundation to understand the basis for applying various analytical methods to a time series and show clearly how to interpret the results. Taking a unique approach to the subject, the authors use a combination of theory and application to real data sets to enhance student understanding throughout the book. This book is written for those students that have a data set in the form of a time series and are confronted with the problem of how to analyse this data. Each chapter covers the various methods that can be used to carry out this analysis with coverage of the necessary theory and its application. In the theoretical section topics covered include; the mathematical origin of spectrum windows, leakage of variance and understanding spectrum windows. The applications section includes real data sets for students to analyse. Scalar variables are used for ease of understanding for example air temperatures, wind speed and precipitation. Students are encouraged to write their own computer programmes and data sets are provided to enable them to recognize quickly whether their programme is working correctly- one data set is provided with artificial data and the other with real data where the students are required to physically interpret the results of their periodgram analysis. Based on the acclaimed and long standing course at the University of Oklahoma, the book is distinct in its approach to the subject matter in that it is written specifically for readers in meteorology and climatology and uses a mix of theory and application to real data sets.

Understanding and preventing destructive leadership and the far-reaching consequences it can have on individuals and organizations. Destructive leadership can take various forms, such as abusive supervision, petty tyranny, and negative or aversive leadership, all of which negatively impact both followers and the organizations themselves. The expert contributions in this volume focus on understanding and preventing destructive leadership and the far-reaching consequences it can have on individuals and organizations. Destructive forms of leadership emerge in an interaction between situations, leaders, and followers. Critical aspects of this interaction examined here include the ways in which attempts at charismatic leadership can lead to the perception of abusive leadership, or even to abusive leadership behavior, narcissism as an antecedent of abusive leadership, how leaders and followers interact in coping with negative leadership (different coping strategies and their consequences), the impacts of constructive and destructive leadership behavior on subordinates' job satisfaction, and the role of leaders in learning from workplace mistakes.
The New Pastoralism Titman, M: New Pastoralism
The New Pastoralism is an exploration of a romantic 'green' and technological architecture that heals the traditional cut between the city dweller and nature. New, gently engaging architectures are arising that employ biomimetics, hydroponics, cybernetic feedback systems, micro ecologies and traditional construction methods with natural materials and vertical landscapes. These are used to create small, subtle, alive spaces that help remind us of our humanity. These soft constructions fulfil a hard-wired human desire to be connected to and delighted by nature. Unlike our ancestors' romantic love of the dramatic power of landscape, these spaces offer a more gentle and artificially tamed nature of 'pastoral' delight. For centuries, Western culture looked to landscape and the pastoral in particular as a setting for the escapist desires to reconnect with the land and elements. More recently we looked to inner-city underbellies for the same romantic freedoms and wilderness. But these exotic desires are now evolving into more distilled and gentler experiences. The use of the skies, planting, water, wildlife and the seasons is becoming subtly incorporated into building layouts and onto building surfaces to offer a subtle new interface with our primordial desire to reconnect with nature

Suicide and Euthanasia in Older Adults
Suicide among older people is a significant problem, but one that has tended to be neglected in recent years. And in an age where populations and cultures are becoming increasingly mixed due to migration and globalization, it is vital that lessons concerning suicide and euthanasia be learned from different countries. In addition to analytical overviews of the relationship between socio-economic or psychological factors and suicidal behavior, differences between younger and older suicides, family factors, and physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia, contributions by leading authorities from 10 different regions each contain a description of suicide in old age, as well as discussions of views concerning the role of the elderly in that culture and the issue of euthanasia/assisted suicide, especially in the terminally ill. This book is of interest not just for suicidologists but also for psychiatrists, psychologists, sociologists, ethicists, thanatologists, geriatricians, psychogeriatricians and psychogerontologists. A remarkable book, dealing with vital but often neglected topics: . Suicide in the elderly . Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide . Cultural aspects

A high proportion of couples in western industrialized countries are unable to have children, and in many cases these couples need psychosocial support. This book describes a range of counseling and therapy approaches that can be used in a variety of circumstances. The approaches described here provide concrete assistance and advice on psychosocial interventions for all professionals who are active in reproductive medicine, fertility treatment, and counseling or therapy for couples. The book introduces the most recent knowledge about psychosomatic treatment of fertility disorders, and describes assessment methods that can be used in everyday practice by those providing both medical treatment and counseling for fertility disorders. On the basis of numerous case examples, various different approaches to counseling and therapy are described, including, for example, specific approaches that can be taken by primary care or family physicians, or how to approach the problems in couples with different cultural backgrounds. A manual for gynecologists in the final chapter provides concrete advice and guidelines for a holistic, psychosomatic course of treatment for childless couples.
Asymptote, an award-winning New York City -- based architectural firm, expands the boundaries of traditional architectural practice with work that ranges from buildings and urban design to computer-generated environments. Recognized internationally as both leading-edge architects and virtual-reality artists as well as sought-after critics and teachers, Asymptote partners Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid have emphasized research into cultural trends and technological influences as the core of their practice. The firm has completed or is overseeing projects around the world, with commissions as diverse as a trading floor for the New York Stock Exchange; a multimedia research park in Kyoto, Japan; a modular furniture system for the Knoll furniture company; a music theater in Graz, Austria; and a new center for art and technology for the Guggenheim Museum in SoHo, New York. Designed and written by the partners, Asymptote is the first book to fully document their "real world" (as opposed to virtual) projects. In mathematical terms, the word "asymptote" is defined as a line that a given curve gets closer and closer to, but never touches, as it gets further from the origin towards infinity. In architectural terms, Asymptote is the Manhattan-based architectural design and research practice established by Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid in 1989.Rashid and Couture's work is intriguing because it draws inspiration from a wide range of sources not traditionally associated with architecture -- among them the design of airline interiors, sporting equipment, and organic systems like seashells and honeycombs; and various means of communicating and disseminating information. Their projects areconcerned as much with light, speed, and traversing virtual boundaries as with "real-world" geometries and building systems. Hani Rashid is one of the founding instructors in the "paperless studio" curriculum at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, a progra

Fruits is a collection of Tokyo street fashion portraits from Japan's premier street fanzine of the same name. 'Fruits' was established in 1994, by photographer Shoichi Aoki, initially as a project to document the growing explosion in street fashion within the suburbs of Tokyo. Over the last five years, the magazine has grown to cult status and is now avidly followed by thousands of Japanese teenagers who also use the magazine as an opportunity to check out the latest styles and trends. The average age of the kids featured in the magazine is between 12 and 18, and the clothes that they wear are a mixture of high fashion -- Vivienne Westwood is a keen favourite -- and home-made ensembles which when combined create a novel, if not hysterical, effect. This extensive collection of portraits represents a unique documentation of the changing face of street fashion throughout the last decade. Colourful, fascinating and funny, this is the first time these cult images have been published outside Japan. Fruits will delight followers of fashion and youth culture.
